Our fourth business area, food, is dedicated to the intelligent use of the oceans as a food resource, which is becoming increasingly important for the future of mankind. Whether algae or mussels in controlled biological quality, functional foods or special molecules for use in food technology: oceanBASIS develops sustainable solutions for healthy nutrition from the sea, in an experienced team from the fields of marine biology, ecotrophology, engineering and biotechnology.
Marine delicatessen for a healthy diet
In addition to a wide range of research activities, oceanBASIS is actively dedicated to the production and marketing of healthy “sea vegetables.” For this, we source algae from certified organic, sustainable harvesting in Europe. Algae are considered to be all-rounders, because with their various fibers, proteins and vitamins they provide all the nutrients that the human body needs. This makes them so valuable as food, especially for vegan or vegetarian diets.
The brand “Meeresgarten”
On the one hand, our “Meeresgarten” organic seaweeds respond to the increasing demand for food that have been produced sustainably with respect for the environment and are equally healthy; but on the other hand, they revive a tradition, because in Asia and also in certain regions of Europe, coastal people have been using seaweed as food for centuries. For example, sea spaghetti – a brown seaweed – is considered an absolute delicacy in France and Ireland. “Meeresgarten” products are thus healthy, protect the environment and contribute to a pleasurable togetherness during cooking evenings with family and friends.

Organic dulse (Palmaria palmata)
Dried, sea-spicy algae flakes from the red algae dulse(Palmaria palmata). Biologically controlled from Brittany. Dulse has been used as a food in Europe for several centuries. It has a purple color and a strong marine flavor. Popular as a snack. Gives a special spice to the dishes. Tip: roast briefly without oil – pure umami feeling! The taste is then reminiscent of bacon! Dulse is an excellent accompaniment to fish, mussels, meat or vegetables.

Organic Kombu Royal (Saccharina latissima)
Dried algae flakes made from brown algae (Saccharina latissima). Like all “Meeresgarten” algae sustainably harvested under controlled conditions. Kombu algae serves as a natural source of iodine and naturally contains glutamic acid, which triggers the popular umami flavor. Kombu is valued in cooking for its subtle, sweet-nutty note and enhances the flavor of other ingredients. This alga is excellent in combination with legumes, as here the digestibility of both ingredients is increased. Kombu Royal is wonderful as a baking ingredient or for seasoning dishes, especially fish.

Organic Sea Spaghetti (Himanthalia elongata)
Dried seaweed sticks made from “sea spaghetti”, a brown algae that can grow up to 3 meters long. It stores the best from the sea in concentrated form: healthy sea minerals and iodine, which is so important for good hormone metabolism. Versatile in use, e.g. in soups and pasta dishes, the algae sticks complement a varied diet. For pasta or soups, cook for about 5 minutes and then pour off the cooking water.

Organic seaweed salad (Ulva sp.), dulse (Palmaria palmata), nori (Porphyra sp.)
Dried algae flakes mix of sea lettuce(Ulva sp.), dulse(Palmaria palmata) and nori(Porphyra sp.). With the seaweed salad you can add a special spice to your dishes. Simply mix it into soups or salads, steam it with vegetables or add it to rice dishes and omelets. Seaweed salad is also suitable as a baking ingredient in bread or savory muffins.
